Even stranger, counting mechanisms are all around us. As I write this, it’s 7:59pm. In one minute, it’ll be 8:00pm, which seems unremarkable. But that’s a base 60 system. In fact, it’s worse than that – time doesn’t stay in base 60, because hours carry at 24 instead of 60. Anyone who’s used the Imperial measurement system, a Chinese abacus, or pounds, shillings, and pence knows the full horror of mixed base systems, which are far more complicated than what we’re dealing with here.

Yeah, that’s base 60.

This whole thing reminds me of Harry Potter‘s knuts, sickles, and galleons. That one’s quite mad. Real mad.

Points to anyone who can tell me the conversion, from knuts to sickles to galleons.
